Electricity Cost Calculator

Home energy monitor measuring appliance electricity use for an electricity cost calculator

Estimate how much any appliance, device, or piece of home equipment costs to run. Enter its wattage and typical usage, then use your own electricity rate or choose a state to load the latest average residential rate available from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Monthly energy use—kWh/month
Estimated monthly cost—per month
Annual energy use—kWh/year
Estimated annual cost—per year

Tip: the wattage printed on an appliance label is often a rated or maximum value. Actual consumption can vary as thermostats, compressors, motors, and power-saving modes cycle on and off.

How the Electricity Cost Calculator Works

The calculator converts watts to kilowatts, multiplies by the number of hours the device runs, and then multiplies the result by your electricity price. This makes it useful for comparing heaters, air conditioners, kitchen appliances, electronics, pumps, and other equipment before you buy or change how you use them.

Formula

Cost = (Watts ÷ 1,000) × Hours Used × Electricity Rate. Your actual utility bill may also include fixed charges, taxes, time-of-use pricing, demand charges, or other adjustments that are not included here.
